Abstract

Standardization is a prerequisite of quality control in any field. Library field is not an exception. The bibliographic control structures of AACR2R, MARC, DDC, LCC, LCSH, ISBD are highly standardized and dependent on rigorous authority work, so that libraries and bibliographic utilities using these tools could provide effective quality services. In order to emphasize the importance of standardization in the field of bibliographic control structures, this study focuses on inconsistencies in transliterated foreign personal and geographic names in headings, used as the caption of a given class as well as in notes describing what is found in a class or clarifying the notation hierarchy in the 4th edition of KDC. This study also examines Korean transliteration of loan words in the schedule as well as the transliterated entries of the Relative Index.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is measure library use behaviors among faculty members and faculty awarenesses toward bibliographic education for undergraduates. Questionnaire listings offered by C university library were sent 200 faculties. 56% responded questionnaires were analyzed. The results are as follows. <TEX>$\circledS1$</TEX>They used library one more times per a month and during vocations & prefered to use scholarly journals. <TEX>$\circledS2$</TEX>They wanted 'subscription for scholarly journals,' 'inter-library loan,' but they seldom experienced in inter-library loan. <TEX>$\circledS3$</TEX>They gained the library skills in experiences and they had the average level of library skills. They used secondary sources and recognized traditional reference services. <TEX>$\circledS5$</TEX>They intended to bibliographic education for the faculty and the wanted group of 10 less and education for the new faculty members. <TEX>$\circledS6$</TEX>They though the students should be able to learn needed library skills. but wasn't necessary. <TEX>$\circledS7$</TEX>They intended to intergrate bibliographic education and cooperate with librarians. But they hadn't been familiar with librarians and encouraged students to use library.

Abstract

With the development of indexing and retrieval techniques and the trends of information retrieval environment becoming more and more user-friendly, existing guideline for international thesaurus establishment standards and basic term relations currently used in thesaurus have become to longer adequate. The purpose of this study is to present solutions to expanding term relations which will fit new information retrieval environment. This report views standards for ISO 2788 and ANSI/NISO Z 39.19, and compares and analyzes 20 thesaurus basis term relations currently used both at home and abroad(14 overseas and 6 in Korea) to find out problems and limitations. Based on findings of the study, this report suggests how to expand thesaurus basic term relations to accomodate changes in information retrieval environment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to confirm what the stress factors are in performing their jobs among librarians in Public libraries. The study further investigates to figure out the difference of the degree in cognition of job stress according to demographic characteristics of individuals and the impacts of the stress factors on job satisfaction. A survey was conducted for the study sending questionaires to 113 librarians working in 14 Public libraries in Pusan. The results of the study are followings: 1) Females experience higher job stress than males. 2) The younger the age, the higher the job stress. Also, the shorter the year at work, the higher the job stress. 3) The lower the license class, the higher the job stress. Also, singles than married have higher job stress. 4) In the impacts of stress factors on job satisfaction, role conflict is the most powerful factor, and then role overload, career development, role underload, role ambiguity and interpersonal relation, each in order.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the service quality measure and service quality level between one sample library and the other. Most typically, service quality is defined in terms of reducing the gap between customer expectations and the actual service provided. This research also focuses on gap reduction. Service quality concept was originally discussed in a commercial environment and may require some adaptation to the non-commercial environment of the academic library. A revised service quality measure that developed by P. J. Calvert and P. Hernon(1996) was used for this research. Results showed that service quality measure of this research was reliable(99 service quality items scale's Cronbach Alpha coefficient was 0.983) and was validated by correlation and factor analysis. Therefore service quality measure of this research will be applied positively for academic libraries. And this research showed that the service quality level of sample academic library was inferior to that of the others. The service quality of sample academic library should be improved to meet the customer's needs and expectations immediately.

As the number of Web reference resources are gradually increasing, reference librarians have to create a Web-based reference resources site. This site includes links to the Web reference resources of good quality, so that reference librarians and users will become accustomed to using these resources. This Study first explores the function of the Web-based reference resources site. Next, it carries out a survey of the current trends in america and Korea. Finally, a model Web-based reference resources site for academic libraries is developed.

정보화가 진행되어감에 따라 정보격차는 더욱 크게 발생한다. 이 논문에서는 정보격차의 요인으로 경제적 빈부차, 정보의 상품화, 그리고 정보수단의 사유화, 정보폭증을 들고 있다. 이러한 요인에 의해 필연적으로 발생하는 정보부자와 빈자간의 정보격차의 해소를 위해서는 정책적인 노력이 있어야 하며 이러한 정보정책은 민주주의의 원칙에 의거하여 이루어져야 한다. 이 논문에서는 민주주의의 원칙에 따라 공정하고 공평한 정보에의 접근과 정보이용이 이루어질 수 있도록 정보의 공공영역이 확보되어야 하며, 이를 위해서 공공도서관과 공공교육, 공론의 장의 역할과 기능이 확대되어야 함을 주장한다.

Abstract

Information gap widens as the information society matures. This paper delineates the factors causing information gap as socioeconomic gap, commercialization of information privation of information means and information explosion. Due to these factors information gap between the information poor and the information rich inevitably widens. To bridge the information gap requires policy efforts that are based on democratic principles. This paper asserts that the public domain of information should be secured to ensure the fair and equal access to information and use of information. It is also argued that the function and role of the public information systems such as public libraries, public schools should be expanded and fortified to ensure the minimum level of fairness and equality in an information society. It is suggested that a public site in a cyber-space might be needed to form public opinions and exchange basic information.
